This look, along with accompanying abstract, was published in 2024 by the International Textile and Apparel Association and was presented at the Association's annual conference in Long Beach, California in November 2024.
This look was made in a junior-level course, in a project which challenged students to integrate technology in their design and development processes. The project began with an exploration in virtual reality, using the VR art software Tilt Brush to begin generating ideas for a design. From there, a refined design was developed. The construction process also included use of different technologies, with this design featuring story-telling artwork custom to the design which was laser etched into the different leathers and carefully appliqued into place.
The artwork and materiality tell a story that reimagines the mythology and symbolism of the phoenix as a reptilian form, discussing concepts about ephemerality of life and the cyclic nature of death and life. Additional details can be found in the design abstract below.
